The purpose for filtering may be to:
  1. Recover either the solids or liquid fraction.
  2. Separate the solids from the liquids for disposal.
  3. Clarification of the liquid phase.

Pressure filtration for liquid clarity is achieved by pumping a slurry through the center feed into fixed vertical plates surrounded by filter media. As the fluid passes through the filter media, a cake of solids forms on the media in the chambers between the plates. The clean liquid flows through the drain field ports and out the corner outlet eyes of each filter plate into a discharge manifold. During the filtration cycle, the plates are held together under hydraulic pressure. Once the filter cycle is completed, the hydraulic pressure is released, the plates are separated, and the solid material is discharged. After the cake is discharged and the filter media on the plates is cleaned, the filtration cycle is repeated.

Separation is to sub-micron. Chemical Treatment is sometimes required for separation and liquid clarity.
